Empire State Building hours, tickets, events, recording of history and times (for times https://www.esbnyc.com/faq ). They suggest the best time to visit is 12pm-2pm to avoid lines or you can order tickets online. In the summer time it stays open until midnight - after 10pm the views are great and the place less packed. The website states: “the lines at the Empire State Building Observatory are as legendary as the building itself. The line actually consists of 3 different lines. The first one is the security line that everyone must go through. Next comes the ticket line. Visitors with pre-purchased tickets can skip this line which can save a considerable amount of time during our busiest times. The 3rd and last line is for the elevators that take you to the Observatory”. Summer and holidays busy.

START: 34th and Fifth Avenue The Empire State Building
The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the city for a very long time. The recorded tour can be listened to online or on your phone before your trip - it is excellent – describes the frenzied pace of the push to build the tallest building in New York City and how it was designed as a Zeppelin docking station. The documentary made by Ken Burns explains it all -New York: A documentary film (snippet below). There’s an annual running race to the top of the building - usually in October Link to Empire State Building run.
The skyscraper is lit in different colors to mark different occasions - an LED lighting system permits a range of 16 million colors. They go out nightly at 2am and on one day in the year, the last Saturday in March they go off for an hour at 8:30pm to join the World Wildlife Federation world movement to recognize climate change. You can check out the color calendar ahead of your visit through this link . Lights have been dimmed around the city in order to reduce energy costs and negative effects on wildlife - landmarks like the Empire State Building however, are exempt from these new policies. Bryant Park is in the same area - in winter there's an ice rink and winter village - in the summer outdoor movies and activities Bryant Park Calendar and Faqs . The ice rink is free and skate rentals are reasonably priced and can be done online. The Winter Village runs from the end of October to March. Great for gifts.
St., Suite 608. Check out hours through the link. It is one of the oldest magic stores in New York City and a treat for anyone. The shop staff are always happy to demonstrate tricks. Ask about D-Lite – a trick that’s fun for 4 year olds up - easy and impressive trick for kids and adults to practice and perform.
thKeens Chop House |
My family's favorite place for lunch is the 120 year old Keens Chop House at 72 West 36th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. It's a steakhouse and serves one of the best burgers in the city. Otherwise sample Korean food. Koreatown runs roughly from 31st to 36th Streets between 5th and 6th Avenues. Try Baekjeong at 1 East 32nd Street for very Korean Barbeque or Jongro at 22 West 32nd Street on the 2nd floor (hard to find but worth it). Both are between 5th and 6th Avenues. Might be fun to check out these guidelines in relation to Korean dining etiquette
After, cross the street to Macy's (the largest department store on the planet!) the New York Times video below provides an insight into the complexities of running a store of this fame and size.
Nearby, explore the many clothing and shoe stores including Old Navy along 34th Streets between 6th and 7th Avenues. The Lindt Chocolate Shop is at 7 West 34th Street - right off of 5th Avenue
Other places to check out in the area: The Morgan Library and Museum at 225 Madison Avenue at 36th Street where you will find the original manuscript of "The Little Prince" and "The Story of Babar the Little Elephant" see "Advance Planning" for hours and exhibits. Madison Square Garden (7th Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets) home of the New York Knicks and venue for touring shows. Book shows in advance if possible!
